CCJs are one of the most detrimental things you can have associated to your name, especially when it comes to opening bank accounts or applying for credit cards and mortgages. A County Court Judgement (CCJ) is court order registered against you for failing to make agreed payments, either as an individual or company. A formal letter threatens legal action and explains the steps you need to take to prevent such formalities. Failure to respond to such correspondence will only leave you in a worse situation. It’s always better to respond and explain your situation, rather than ignoring it and hoping it will go away. To avoid having a CCJ against your name, you must conform to the repayments of any outstanding debts, interest and court fees in full, within a month.
If you think you may have a CCJ, because you’ve experienced credit issues, you can check the Register of Judgements, Orders and Fines for £4 and perform a CCJ check against your name. Just because you have had issues in the past, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s because you have a CCJ. A whole host of factors can contribute to a lender’s rejection.
CCJs and any other record of judgement stay on the Register of Judgements, Orders and Fines, as well as your credit report, for a minimum of 6 years. They are not permanent. So, this means you can apply for a mortgage even if your slate isn’t quite clean. With the right expertise and lender, you could be considered for a mortgage, even if you have CCJs on your record.
Lenders use credit reference agencies to acquire information about an applicant's credit and debt. This helps them to make decisions about who to give credit to. As well as account information, they also access any public information such as bankruptcies. These kind of assessments occur even when you’re applying for a mobile phone contract, to see if you are creditworthy. So, any infliction they find could be detrimental to your application. Also, because CCJs stay on your record for 6 years, sometimes it’s a real waiting game, unless a specific lender can see past the issues.
